The pilot of a Chartered Teacher programme in Wales continued last week with the launch of the latest module, ‘Improving Practice Through Action Research’ involving 11 primary and secondary school teachers spanning seven local authorities across Wales.
Speaking at the first day of the pilot at the Cardiff School of Education, University of Wales Cardiff (UWIC) Anne Hughes, Director of Enterprise said; “We are very pleased to be a part of the Chartered Teacher pilot programme in Wales. The UWIC pilot module will enable teacher participants to acquire knowledge and skills to investigate their own teaching practice and plan the way ahead. This will include getting to grips with data gathering, action based research, data analysis and dissemination. Teachers completing the module will not only develop their teaching but also gain credits towards a Masters degree.”
Pilot participant, Katie Sadler of Ysgol Bro Ogwr Bridgend, teaches year 2 infants and commented; “Today has been a good opportunity to meet and share experience with teachers from different backgrounds and Local Education Authorities, all with the same objective of raising standards in teaching. As a Welsh-medium primary level teacher, the contact I have with fellow teachers can sometimes be limited. I feel really honoured to take part in this programme, as its a great opportunity to continue my professional development. I will certainly take back to school a broader perspective on teaching.”
Veronica Arora, Head of Humanities and Geography at Bryn Hafren Comprehensive, said; “I am very pleased to be able to further my CPD in this way. The opportunity to reflect on the way I currently teach and gain an understanding of new and alternative teaching methods will prove invaluable. I am already looking forward to applying my new skills in the classroom”.
Hayden Llewellyn, Deputy Chief Executive of GTCW commented; “This latest module marks the a further step in the highly-anticipated Chartered Teacher pilot in Wales. The first pilot ‘Talk for Thought’ at Swansea Institute and North East Wales Institute recently finished and was very well received by teachers. Early feedback from teachers at UWIC is very positive”
