Eco-Play Idea Encourages Sustainable Design by Pupils

Beverly Howe, Science Curriculum leader at Brynnau Primary Scool, Bridgend has been awarded a professional development bursary from the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW) to complete a BTEC course aimed at improving her knowledge of environmental education.
Using her new skills, Beverly has helped pupils to grow willow to improve the school play area as well as building shelters and hiding places. Once harvested, the willow will be used by pupils in a number of school projects and for making arts and crafts Beverly held also held a session for other teachers within the school to discuss the techniques has been learnt and how they can be used to benefit pupil learning
Beverly said; “I’m so pleased that I’ve had the opportunity to develop my knowledge and skills in this area. The course has given me both enthusiasm and ideas, but more importantly, I have also been able to have an impact on the children I teach ”.
Hayden Llewellyn , Deputy Chief Executive of GTCW, commented: "A significant proportion of the teaching population in Wales has taken advantage of the Council's CPD funding programme. Teachers in Wales take their professional development seriously and we are delighted to be able to enthuse Beverly and her pupils by awarding funding to her”.
GTCW has taken measures to ensure that the CPD funding is as easy as possible for teachers to access. Information and application forms are sent to all eligible teachers and can be downloaded through GTCW's website at www.gtcw.org.uk.
