As the regulatory body for the teaching profession in Wales we maintain a Register of those teachers who are suitably qualified to work as teachers. Currently there are in excess of 38,000 teachers registered.
In order to register with GTCW a teacher must comply with the following and in doing so provides reassurance to parents, pupils, employers and the general public that they:-
Under the Education Act 2002, every qualified teacher, who carries out specified work in a maintained school must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW). and registration is subject to compliance with the General Teaching Council for Wales Registration Rules (September 2011) (PDF 98k).
This requirement applies to persons working on a full time, part-time or supply basis.
Other teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), such as those working in independent schools, in the further or higher education sectors, working as self-employed home tutors or not currently teaching are encouraged to register.
Those registered with GTCW will be required to pay an annual registration fee in order to maintain their registration. The registration period runs from 1st April to 31st March each year and the annual registration fee is set at £45.
Personal details held on the Register include a teacher's name, contact address, employment, qualifications and professional development.
The information held gives the Council an overview of the composition of the teaching profession in Wales and enables the Council to speak with authority on behalf of the profession on matters such as professional development needs, teacher recruitment and supply and initial teacher training.
We guarantee the security of the information held on the Register, which is fully compliant with Data Protection legislation.
Information on the register can be obtained by registered teachers who have full access to their record, employers who can make employment or pre-employment registration checks and the general public who are able to check only whether a teacher is registered with the Council or not. Access to this information can be gained by logging in or, alternatively by contacting the Qualifications and Registration Team directly.
