Returning to teaching?

New requirement from 1st September 2012

From 1st September 2012, any teacher seeking to return to the teaching profession in Wales after a break of five years or more will need to meet the Council's "Returning to Teaching" criteria.

Why is this being introduced?

During the course of their career, many qualified teachers may choose not to practise as a teacher for an extended period of time. This may be for a number of reasons, such as to pursue another job, to undertake further study, to travel, to take parental leave or to carry out caring responsibilities.

When teachers seek to return to the classroom, it is important that they are fully prepared and their knowledge and skills are up to date, not only for the benefit of the pupils they will teach but also for their own benefit.

What will I need to do?

When applying for registration with the Council, a returning teacher will be asked to complete a section of the registration application form which confirms that he / she has updated their knowledge and skills before returning to teaching. The period of "updating" must consistent of at least 10 days.
