General Registration Information
What is the Register of Qualified Teachers?
In keeping with all other professional bodies, the Council keeps an accurate Register of its members and currently has in excess of 38,000 teachers registered.
Who needs to register?
Under the Education Act 2002, every qualified teacher, who carries out specified work in a maintained school must be registered with the General Teaching Council for Wales (GTCW). and registration is subject to compliance with the General Teaching Council for Wales Registration Rules (June 2010) (PDF 40k).
This requirement applies to persons working on a full time, part-time or supply basis.
Other teachers with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS), such as those working in independent schools, in the further or higher education sectors, working as self-employed home tutors or not currently teaching are encouraged to register.
Annual Registration Fee
Those registered with GTCW will be required to pay an annual registration fee in order to maintain their registration. The registration period runs from 1st April to 31st March each year and the annual registration fee is set at £45.
Information Held on the Register
Personal details held on the Register include a teacher’s name, contact address, employment, qualifications and professional development.
The information held gives the Council an overview of the composition of the teaching profession in Wales and enables the Council to speak with authority on behalf of the profession on matters such as professional development needs, teacher recruitment and supply and initial teacher training.
